VESSEL 986452

VESSEL 986452
Description: Lead pot mend of 'rivet' form, probably Roman in date. The mend is formed of a strip of lead, D-shaped in cross section, highly convex on the front and flat on the back with two integral pegs. A line running around the side suggests it was built up from two lengths, placed one on top of the other and partially fused, one piece being longer than the other. The pegs are circular in cross section and have a harrower base ending in a bulbous end. The mend is now bent inwards slightly and is 53.3mm long, 10.5mm wide and 9.3mm thick, excluding the pegs, 15.9mm including them and weighs 32.41g. Steven Willis (2005) has discussed such repairs which he classifies as 'rivet' form in the context of Samian, the most commonly repaired vessels. He quotes Jeremy Evans who suggests rivets were more common form of repair in the 'upland' zone (section 11.1).
