BUCKLE 986110

Description: An incomplete Medieval copper alloy sheet buckle plate. The frame of the buckle and the back plate is missing. The buckle plate was formed of a single piece of copper alloy sheet bent in half to give a front and back plate but has a breaks at the bend where it would have gone over the bar of the buckle frame. At the bend it was cut into two tabs divided by a central pin slot. At the attachment end are two circular holes, one larger than the other and overlapping it, possibly a repair. The front is decorated with a border of two lines of opposing triangles both lines arranged with the points outwards and the base towards the other line. The border runs along the attachment end, down both sides and across the frame end, where it is interrupted by the pin slot. The entire piece is 24.4mm long, 9.7mm wide and 0.5mm thick and weighs 0.45 grams. Without a frame it is hard to date the plate precisely but the form of rivets, the cut outs at the fold and the decoration all suggest a later Medieval date, c.AD 1150-1450.
