HARNESS FITTING 814454
Description: A fragment of a cast copper alloy object, possibly part of a Roman terret ring (see SWYOR-D5EBC2 for very similar fragment) It consists of a rod of metal, cylindrical, curved, with old breaks at both ends. Towards one end is a raised flat topped stud. The item is 21.16mm in length, 12.35mm in height and weighs 8.85g. The rod is 6.18mm in diameter. The stud is 11.23mm in diameter and sits on a 'neck' which is 7.40mm in diameter. The whole of the stud and its neck are raised 6.04mm above the rod. It has a smooth, dark grey patina. It is possible that this is part of a spur, the stud may have been intended to take a leather attachment (such as runs across the front of the boot to hold a spur). However, it is suggested in SWYOR-D5EBC2 that this similar item is traditionally known as a platform decorated terret, Lewis (2015) classifies terrets of this type as "terrets with triple projections; platforms" in her PHD thesis: Iron Age and Roman-era vehicle terrets from Western and central Britain; an interpretive study".
