BROOCH 814435

BROOCH 814435
Description: An incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch with constriction for the pin and two knops, one a canted collett, the other an elongated oval in form with a central groove, perhaps intended to give the impression of the tail of a bird. But see WILT-EACB2C. Some references suggest this type of knop represents hands in prayer. It dates to AD1270 - 1350. This brooch appears to be oval in form but is twisted. It is D shape in section. The pin is still in place, wrapped around the constriction in the hoop, but only part of it remains, broken at an early date. The brooch is 30.76mm in length, 17.90mm in width and weighs 2.01g. The tail like knop is 6.47mm in length, the collett, which would have held a small stone or paste, is 3.50mm in diameter at its top.
