COIN HOARD 628043

COIN HOARD 628043
Description: Description: Two incomplete and extremely worn silver pennies of the 11th or 12th century fused together to form a single object. One face has the obverse of the coin visible. This depicts a bust left with left arm crossing bust and holding sceptre left. An E is visible in the inscription at 12 o'clock. It is likely that this is a penny of the Profile/Cross Fleury type of William I (1066-87), but the poor preservation of the coin makes this identification uncertain. The visible side of the other coin is so worn that it is not possible to determine whether it is an obverse or reverse. Dimensions and metal content: The 'hoard' measures 21.53x17.42x1.83mm and weighs 2.51g. The diameter of each coin is c. 21mm. The silver quality of the coins has not been tested, but coins of this period routinely have a high silver content, far in excess of the 10% threshold stipulated by the Act. Consequently, in terms of age, quantity and precious metal content, the hoard qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
