BUCKLE 467555

BUCKLE 467555
Description: A small, cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle of medieval date. The buckle frame is oval, slightly asymmetrical, with a lipped outer edge (15.7 by 14.1mm). On the upper surface this latter features a tapering triangular groove in which the pin sits. The pin bar opposite is offset and narrowed. The lower surface of the frame is flat while the upper surface is bevelled externally. The pin is missing. The small plate (L.: c. 16.3mm) is of basic folded construction. It is broadly rectangular and bent around the pin bar with a slot for the pin and slight tapering to accommodate the frame. There is a rivet hole at the attachment end with its rivet in situ fastening the two halves together. The whole has corroded mid/dark-green colour, with the frame the darker of the components. Traces of orange/brown corrosion product around the pin slot suggest that the pin may have been made in iron. Buckle frames of similar form and size can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 74-75; refs. 306-309). They have been found in London in contexts dating to the late 13th and 14th centuries.
