MOUNT 459846

MOUNT 459846
Description: A slightly corroded, complete gilded cast copper-alloy post-medieval mount. It has an open D-shaped frame with a D shaped central opening. On the straight edge the continuation from the sides takes the form of rounded ends that do not meet; the openwork joins to the central aperture. The upper surface of the object is decorated with symmetrical moulded patterns: fronds along the sides curving to a motif at the centre of the outer edge, possibly a flower; the detail has been slightly obscured by corrosion. The rounded terminals are filled with moulded quatrefoils. These designs are contained within a border that follows the edges of the mounts. On the reverse of the object there a pair of integral lugs bent towards each other: they are both situated around a half way along the artefact's length. The prongs' tips have been slightly abraded. The mount is of a red-brown colour most of which is covered in light-green corrosion product. This colour is found on gilded objects; large patches of gilt survive on the upper surface. This mount is comparable to an example recorded on this database - ref. SWYOR-7431D6. The rounded ends have been bent downwards slightly in profile.
