Description: An incomplete Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy scabbard chape, probably dating to c. AD 1300-1600. The chape comprises of a sheet of copper alloy, originally folded into a tapering tube, closed at one end by four cut lobes folded inwards. The open end is damaged, as is one side of the chape, the edges of the sheet originally met at a longitudinal seam on the reverse of the chape, one edge of which survives. The front of the chape is decorated with rouletted or punched decoration of bands of addorsed triangular punches, arranged into a zig-zag band below the mouth, contained within two transverse lines of punches. Below this is a further line of punches, surmounting a chevron tapering towards the incomplete mouth. Length 55.6mm; Width 35.4mm; thickness 8.6mm; weight 7.79g.
