Description:

New house built on the site of the Red House, for Matthias Buckworth Wilks 'who lived there and sometimes let it'; purchased by (Col.) William Martin Powell, c.1885.Bowden-Smith pp. 1-2: ‘Our nearest neighbour was the Curate-in-Charge, Mr Lucas, who was then a widower with 3 children; and his sister and aunt lived with him. [p. 2] His house was called the Red House, and had just, in 1855, been bought by Admiral Aitcheson from Captain Breton, whose family had gone to live at Southampton. Mr Lucas was there some years and married one of Sir Charles Burrard’s daughters. Mr Wilks bought the house after Mr Lucas left, and pulled it down, leaving a piece of it for a lodge. He built a new house and it is called BROOKLANDS, and lived there and sometimes let it till Colonel Powell bought it some 20 years ago.’
