Description:

Probably the best of the master keepers’ lodges (Lascelles, 35 years, p. 117), it was pulled down in 1833. According to Gilpin, pp. 110-111: ‘From Burley-lodge it is little more than two miles to Boldre-wood lodge, the seat of [p. 111] lord Delawar. this house enjoys one of the finest situations of the forest. It stands high, with an extensive lawn before it, from which it commands a vast extent of forest-scenery, spread around in a great variety of distance; particularly towards Burley-lodge, where the wood stretches far and wide, beyond a lengthened savannah, which sets them off to great advantage.’According to Mudie, Hampshire, 310: ‘Boldrewood lodge has its enclosure about a mile to the north of Burley lodge, and it is, after that, the largest in the Forest, containing upwards of 180 acres of ground.’
