BRACELET 984836

BRACELET 984836
Description: Part of a Roman copper alloy bracelet dating to c. AD 300 to 450. The artefact is formed of a strip of copper alloy. The strip is a flattened D-shape in cross section with a flat back and slightly convex front. It narrows gradually but consistently from one end to the other where there is an expanded but now bent and broken terminal. The other end has a patinated, worn straight break. The terminal, one original end of the bracelet, is flattened and expanded into a circle with a circular hole through it. The end is now broken off and it is bent. The outer surface of the bracelet is decorated along its length with transverse incised lines arranged in groups with plain sections between. There is also a circular raised boss just before the terminal. The band of the bracelet is 4.2mm wide and 1.5mm thick and the widest point; it is 44.5mm long and weighs 1.16g. The fragment can be compared to other bracelets with transverse incised lines in groups published by Crummy (1983: 40) from contexts dated to the 4th to early 5th centuries.
