BROOCH 869244

Description: An incomplete copper alloy Roman T-shape brooch dating to the period c AD 50-150. The brooch is missing the head loop, the pin, the lower part of the bow and the catchplate. The head bears two tubular wings, one of which is broken off towards the tip, 11.91 mm from the head. The other has a patch of brown corrosion along its upper surface, although the groove around the tip of the wing is still visible. From the top of the head originally projected a single loop, now broken. The bow extends forwards in a curve from the head. It is rectangular shaped and, beneath a plain square panel, a raised central band, surmounted by a narrower ridge, drops away vertically down the spine of the bow. This central band is framed on either side by hatching. The back part of the bow is smooth and undecorated. The axis case is largely intact and between the wings is a small slot for the attachment of the pin. The bow extends 15.40 mm at its furthest point below the wings before the break. The brooch is 24.10 mm in length and 37.01 mm across the wings. It weighs 6.89 g. A similar brooch is illustrated in Hattatt R. (2007), p. 304, number 923.
