VESSEL 844891

VESSEL 844891
Description: A corroded and worn cast copper-alloy leg and foot from a cooking vessel of post-medieval date (c. 1500-1700). The fragment is broadly triangular in cross-section with a flattened reverse, with a central rib extending prominently forward. The base of the foot is worn and uneven. The leg is set at at oblique angle to it, expanded at the front of the base. The body is green/brown in colour and is coated in a black sooty residue. The surface is pitted and uneven overall. The leg has a horizontal break across the top where it has broken away from the rest of the leg. The break is corroded and has a simmilar appearence to the rest of the patina suggesting it was broken in the past, possibly before deposition. Similar examples can be seen in Butler, Green and Payne (2009, 4-6; fig. 4) which suggest a 16th-17th century date based upon the ribbed leg and sub-triangular cross-section. This vessel leg measures 30.8 mm in length, 31.88 mm in width, 11.3 mm in thickness and weighs 53.31 g
