BROOCH 824927
Description: A copper alloy fragment of a Roman trumpet brooch dating between the 1st and 2nd century AD. The loop, pin, lower bow foot and catchplate are missing. The head of the brooch is semi-circular in shape, and a fixture potentially a loop has broken off. The arched edge of the head has a fine groove boarder, and down the centre there is a vertical ridge, which follows down to the bow. There is only small fragment of the bow left, and it arches from the base of the head until the break just below the button. Just before the break there is a sub rectangular decorative design, which consists of a fine groove, and then beneath it the sub rectangular shape which is slightly wider than the bow, and has a long central ridge and two parallel shorter ridges. The design in finished with another boarder like ridge beneath. Only a fragment of the pin survives, but it is secure to its attachment, and moves freely. The posterior side of the brooch remains undecorated. The maximum lenght for the brooch is 36.86mm, the maximum width of the brooch (measurement taken from the head) is 19.75mm and the weight is 6.49g. A fair example of this brooch can be found in Hattats (2007) "A Visual Catalouge of Richard Hattatts's Ancient Brooches" page 326, figure 185, No. 1436 and page 328, figure 187, No. 960.
