HARNESS FITTING 794878

Description: One half of a copper alloy medieval to post-medieval snaffle bit. It comprises of one of iron cheek piece attached to half of the copper-alloy mouthpiece. The other cheek piece and mouthpiece are missing. The Cheek piece is Type A and the mouthpiece is Type 2. The end of the mouthpiece where it would connect with the other half is broken. The mouthpiece measures 100.96mm in length, 12mm in width and 11mm in thickness. The cheek piece has an external diameter of 67.66mm, an internal diameter of 55.17mm and a thickness of 5.26mm. All together it is 152.66mm in length and weighs 116.69g. Snafffle bits were used mainly for horse riding rather than domestic or farm use.
