Description: A copper alloy medieval ewer spout dating to c.AD 1250 - 1350. The rest of the ewer is missing. The spout is shaped to represent a dog's head. The back of the head and neck are decorated with chevron incisions. The opening of the spout is situated in the dog's open mouth. The head is detailed with incisions to further create the image of a dog: the ears can be seen on either side; hooded eyes can be seen either side of the ridge of the snout; two depressions on the end of the snout represent nostrils.
The head measures 26.67mm in length, 22.51mm in width and 19.17mm in thickness. The neck measures 28.69mm in length, 16mm in width and 17.99mm in thickness. The spout opening in the mouth has a diameter of 4.45mm where as the opening in the neck has a diameter of 7.01mm.
Ewers were used in the household alongside basins. Often for formal washing.
