Description: An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester one-piece brooch dating to the period c. AD20 - 100. The pin, spring, part of the head, lower section of bow and the catchplate are missing. The brooch measures 36.44mm in length, 7.66mm maximum width, 4.24mm minimum width, is 3.04mm thick and weighs 3.58g. The head exhibits the wings rectangular in cross section, measuring 3.9 wide 2.43 high and 1.87mm thick. There is a forward projecting lug which curls upwards and round so it touches the bow positioned in the centre of the head, the section that would touch the bow is missing. It would house the iron axis bar for the pin mechanism. The axis bar and pin are missing. There is an external chord through which the spring would have passed positioned above the lug which curls upwards and tapers to a point at the top of the bow. The bow tapers along its length to a point. There is a break along the lower section of the bow meaning thw lower box an catchplate are missing. The remaing bow measures 33.16mm in length, 4.08mm in width and 3mm in thickness. The brooch has a red-brown colouring. Similar to WILT-70F796 Cf. Hattatt, R, 2007, p. 297, no. 1455.
