STRAP FITTING 76450

Description: Copper alloy mount, perhaps from a sword belt. Its plate is flat and consists of two identical lobes, both square in shape with the centre of each edge outcurved. They are decorated in low relief with a border around a central square interlaced with a curving line. In the centre of each lobe is a dot with a lozenge around. Each lobe has a circular attachment hole, in the centre of the lower lobe and towards the top of the upper lobe. The upper lobe has a small knop at the top, and at the bottom of the lower lobe is a hook made from a circular-section rod bent up and ending in a pyramidal knop. Despite the interlaced design, this mount seems likely to be early post-medieval and related to hooked fittings from sword belts.
