HARNESS MOUNT 74381

HARNESS MOUNT 74381
Description: Complete copper alloy medieval heraldic harness mount. It is 'shield-shaped', 25mm wide at the top and 30.5mm long and 2mm thick. It weighs 11.33g. On the reverse is a circular sectioned, 5mm diameter, 9mm long attachment stud. It is leaning slightly to one side. Fragments of original patina remain. On the decorated side the original patina is missing, but traces of blue and red enamel remain. The decoration is that of a cross + with arms c.7mm wide and filled with four X s on the horizontal and five X s on the vertical. At the centre, all the X s manage to join each other without disrupting their sequence. The X s show traces of dark blue. The cross is outlined in red and one of the four areas that have been created between the cross and the edge of the mount appears to have been filled with this red enamel, although it only survives in patches so may have contained a depiction - perhaps an animal facing left - (the other three segments are too worn to tell if this is the case).
