BROOCH 76413

Description: Fragment of a Roman copper-alloy brooch, consisting of part of the bow and the foot. The break in the bow is worn and occurs roughly at its midpoint. The bow is 7 mm wide and quite highly arched, and its central area is curved in cross-section. Towards the lower part of the bow is a flat panel decorated with a pair of transverse grooves above a pair of side notches. The foot flares from 7 mm wide at the junction with the bow to 9 mm wide at the bottom. It is decorated with two widely spaced pairs of transverse grooves, one part way down the foot and the other right at the bottom. On the reverse is a catchplate which runs the whole depth of the foot; the base of the catchplate and the foot are cut off at angle. The catchplate looks as if it has been cast in its curved shape, and making space for the pin has resulted in the metal being so thin at the front of the brooch that it has broken through to make a hole in the foot.
