STRAP END 74707

Description: Copper alloy Roman strap end. The upper edge of the object appears to be broken off, although a small sem-circular section survives where the object appears to have been divided into two plates. Beneath this the object narrows, forming convex edges, then expands again, forming concave edges. The object then forms a generally rectangular element. This section, beneath the semi-circular upper element, has an incised border along the edges, and the edges are damaged. It is likely that there would have been openwork decoration in the section, the outer edges of which have been broken off. Beneath this the object expands to form a generally oval, solid element, with an oval knop with a collar projecting from the base. The upper surface of this section bears incised and moulded decoration in the form of two concentric incised circles with a central incised dot, speperated by two circular ridges. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Patchy mid-green patina. These strap ends have sometimes been referred to as amphora-shaped.
