BROOCH 742366

Description: A copper alloy Hod Hill type brooch dating to AD 43-75. The brooch is incomplete and is missing the top of the brooch which curled forward to create the attachment for the bar holding the pin, which is also missing. The catchplate is incomplete and the foot of the brooch may be missing. At the top of the brooch is the bifurcate section that originally curled forward to hold the pin bar. This section narrows and there is a raised rib across the neck. The brooch then widens to form knopped wings on either side of the top of a central panel which has two grooves and three ribs running vertically down the top third of the bow. This panel then narrows and there are four sets of two bands with vertically incised decoration, each pair of bands is separated by a curved area which gradually narrows towards the foot before widening before the last set of bands. There is evidence of tinning on the front of the brooch. The back of the brooch is undecorated. The catchplate is incomplete and extends from the centre of the bow to the foot.
