Description: An incomplete copper alloy medieval or post medieval purse bar of Ward Perkins Type A2 dating to the period c. AD 1450 - 1550. The purse bar consists of a trapezoidal drilled boss decorated on one face by a series of radiating diagonal grooves inlaid with enamel and on the opposite face by a series of incised cross-hatched grooves also inlaid with enamel. The pendant loop is missing. One one side the boss terminates in an old break. On the opposite side it projects outwards, forming a moulded beast's head gripping the side bar. The side bar is ovular in cross-section and terminates in a narrowed collar followed by an expanded circular-cross-sectioned terminal. The side bar exhibits a pattern of lattice-work grooves inlaid with niello. An attachment flange projects from the underside of the side bar and exhibits two sewing holes.
The purse bar measures 95.33mm in length, 13.95mm maximum width, 3.99mm minimum width, 10.24mm maximum thickness, 2.16mm minimum thickness and weighs 39.49g.
WILT-128B76 was found in a similar location by the same finder and given the sylistic similarities it may be that it is part of the same artefact
