Description: An incomplete copper alloy medieval or post medieval purse bar dating to the period c. AD 1450 - 1550. The purse bar consists of a moulded beast's head gripping the side bar whcih would have originally been attached to the now missing central boss. The side bar is ovular in cross-section and terminates in a narrowed collar followed by an expanded circular-cross-sectioned terminal. The side bar exhibits a pattern of lattice-work grooves inlaid with niello. An attachment flange projects from the underside of the side bar and exhibits two sewing holes. The purse bar measures 72.62mm in length, 12.22mm maximum width, 4.25mm minimum width, 9.23mm maximum thickness, 1.87mm minimum thickness and weighs 22.87g. WILT-126123 was found by the same finder in a similar location and it may be that, given the stylistic similarities, they are both part of the same artefact
