COIN 726354

COIN 726354
Description: A copper-alloy Roman sestertius of Crispina dating to the period c. AD 178-188 (Reece period 9), SALVS SC reverse type depicting Salus seated left holding patera feeding snake coiled around altar. Mint of Rome. RIC III, p. 442, no. 672a. Crispina’s coinage was traditionally dated to c. AD 178-182, but more recent research suggests that she was probably not exiled to Capri until AD 188. Therefore, we date her coins to c. AD 178-188; although some coins probably date to AD 178-80, we cannot be sure which they are so all Crispina’s coins are assigned to Reece Period 9 (AD 180-192).
