MOUNT 601115

Description: An incomplete gilded copper alloy Post Medieval (AD c.1600-1700) mount with integral pointed lugs, missing a fragment of one corner and the end of a lug. It is sub-triangular in shape with ornamentation projecting at the top and bottom. At pointed end the mount terminates with a small oval knop, while the wide end terminates with a larger circular knop in the centre between two pairs of projecting points. Decoration consists of a raised floral or curvilinear design. The circular knop at the wide end appears to have been dcorated to look like a human head with hollow eyes and a transverse line for a mouth. There are also grooves at the edge which may represent hair. There is also a raised border along the two long edges and around the pointed end. The whole of the front surface within the outer raised border appears to have been gilded but only a few traces remain. On the reverse are two bent lugs, both off centre, one near the top and the other near the bottom. One of the lugs is missing its tip. Overall, it measures 27.75mm long, 16.25mm wide and 5.65mm thick (not including the lugs the fitting is 2.35mm thick). It weighs 2.84g.
