Description: A fragment of Early Early-Medieval (500-600) copper alloy gilt small square-headed brooch, consisting of the headplate and small portion of the bow only. It measures 13.11x15.35x5.24mm and weighs 1.9g. The headplate measures 15.35x8.34x2.03mm (without lug). At the centre of a sunken rectangular area are eight raised vertical ribs, the group being flanked with a rope-effect rib, decorated with transverse grooves. The gilding is mostly retained except on the vertical ribs. The bow above is 6.86mm wide and worn at the old break. It curves forwards slightly and survives to a length of c.5mm. Two U-shaped grooves (one at either side of the base of the bow) still retaining their gilding and are the only visible decoration. To the reverse is the worn D-shaped lug with iron corrosion to either side from the missing pin.
