Description: A fragment of Roman (AD 20-80) copper alloy bow brooch, consisting of a worn part of the bow and foot (or lower bow) beneath, and a broken catchplate to the reverse. The fragment measures 29.94x10.24x4.34mm and weighs 2.95g. The bow is flat in cross-section and 1.85mm thick. It tapers from the old break to the foot below (10.24mm to 9.10mm). It is decroated with four vertical grooves and five corresponding ribs, the central one of which has traces of worn short decorative transverse lines. Below, the brooch tapers from 7.24mm to 5.46mm, where the break is so worn it is uncertain if it is a break or original edge.This part of the brooch is flat also and 1.58mm thick, decorated with at least three transverse ribs before the break/ edge. To the reverse the worn and broken catchplate extends from the base of bow to the break/ edge. All original patina has been lost.
