BROOCH 38793

Description: Cast copper-alloy plate brooch. Octangonal with loop at top (damaged) and large circular lug at bottom. In between, there is a small lug at each of the six angles on the outside edge. There is a raised central circular boss with a small copper-alloy nipple at centre and around that the reserved ornament consists of a quatrefoil with traces of red enamel outside the petals. No trace of enamel infill within the four petals. . Around the boss is a recessed border with traces of a black infill, possibly niello. In the outer field are eleven ‘petals’; three of which are damaged and hollow due to the thinness of the metal. The large circular lug at the bottom of the plate has a central circular annulet which may once have held enamel. The hinged pin is mounted between two lugs. Short catchplate, edges damaged. Pin bent.
