BROOCH 275845
Description: An incomplete cast and enamelled disc brooch of Roman date (AD 80 - 250), with a damaged edge and missing its spring and pin (and with damaged catchplate and lug). It measures 21.46x19.72mm ‘in diameter’, is 2.53mm thick and weighs 3.29g.
The brooch is flat at the front and circular in plan with the remains of small peripheral lugs where the edge is intact (up to a maximum of 6). At the centre is a six-pointed star with copper alloy walls and centre dot (pellet). The star shape is filled with red enamel and the area surrounding it, a now greeny-blue colour. The surviving lugs extend from the points of the star.
The rear face of the brooch has a broken perforated lug and a catchplate missing its curl.
This brooch is similar to three others published brooches (Hattatt 1987, 172. fig. 56, refs. 1041-1043). In, “Roman Brooch Timeline”, Worrell (2007), dates flat enamelled disc brooches to AD80-AD250. Cf. IOW-4369F1 for a very similar star design.
