BELL 153724

BELL 153724
Description: Post Medieval animal (‘crotal’ or ‘rumbler’) bell. This complete example has a square suspension loop between two circular sound holes located on the upper hemisphere. The sides of the upper hemisphere are slightly concave where the sound holes are located. There is a prominent ridge with a semi-circular cross section separating the upper and lower hemispheres. The sound slot in the lower hemisphere terminates in two circles, and is parallel to the suspension loop. The surface of the bell is extremely worn and pitted. The lower hemisphere appears to have been decorated with three arches on each side, extending up to the median line, however the detail is unclear due to the condition of the metal. The iron ball is still extant, with some corrosion. The bell has a mid green patina, with small patches of iron corrosion around the sound slot from the bell. The bell is 39.08mm long with a diameter of 31.35mm.
