STRAP FITTING 141607
Description: A worn cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The mount is sub-hemispherical, with a main convex element. At one end this is divided from a hook that curves back towards the mount by a transverse ridge. At the other end a transverse ridge divides the main body from a lobe which terminates in a knop. On the reverse is a separate sheet plate rivetted to the mount at the base of the main body; the second rivet which would have also rivetted the mount to a strap through the upper face has been lost. The mount is slightly recessed to take the plate neatly. A leather fragment has been retained between the mount and its backplate. The mount has an orange-brown colour with traces of mid-light green corrosion product on the upper face particularly. A hooked mount of similar construction can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 42; ref. 362). Read (ibid., 30) states that such a mount would have been used to suspend a sword scabbard from a baldric, although it is sometimes classified as a dress fastener. The example illustrated in Read features a pendent fitting which hangs freely in the hook.
