Description: Medieval buckle. Incomplete, oval frame with ornate outside edge. The decorated outside edge is cigar-shaped, with a design of 3 equally spaced incised lines, the central line with two further incised lines formin a St.Andrew's cross-type design. This ornamented section is 26.46mm long, 6.24mm wide and 2.10mm thick. All that remains of the rest of the buckle are two small projections of metal, one approximately 8.54mm in length and the other 4.30mm in length. The reverse of the buckle is flat with no decoration. The buckle weighs 2.14 grams. Egan and Pritchard (Egan, G and Pritchard, F, 1991. Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3. Dress Accessories c. 1150 - 1450)illustrate several similar types (289, 292 and 301) and date these circa 1230 - 1260.
