Description: The object is a Post Medieval strap fitting, in the form of a hook. The fitting is made from cast copper alloy. The body of the strap fitting is an inverted blunt triangle in plan with rounded upper edges. The upper edge is shaped with a wide central ‘V’. The body has two circular rivet holes positioned one above the other. There are remains of rivets in each rivet hole. The tip of the triangle extends to form an integral hook. The hook is 4.29mm wide, 6.82mm in diameter and does not taper. The hook curls towards the reverse forming a flattened ‘O’ shape in profile. The terminal of the hook is blunt. The reverse of the object is slightly concave and has traces of iron corrosion from the rivets. Within the hook an annular loop has been secured. This loop is not integral to the strap fitting. It is circular in plan, and is 11.49mm in diameter. The surface of the fitting and annular loop has traces of a brown patina. The strap fitting, including the loop, measures 34.08mm long and is 12.62mm wide at the top. it is 1.40mm thick. It weighs 3.26g. Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households: Medieval and Post Medieval Finds From Norwich Survey, Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology 58) illustrates similar examples, Nos. 257 and 258, and dates these to the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Margeson comments these may be related to sword belts.
