Burley Manor
Photo: postcard (still hoping to get the one New Forest Explorers has!)
Description:

Manor house acquired and rebuilt 1852 by Colonel William Clement Drake Esdaile (1820-99). Between 1891 and 1895 he moved to Park Cottage and was selling off plots of land in Bisterne Close. His daughter Annie Clementina and her husband Ellis Cunliffe Lister Lister-Kay were living there 1895-1903; in 1907, Stanley Victor Coote (1863-1925), son of an Admiral Coote; and, from 1915 to his death, Colonel Frank Willan (1846-1931). Hardcastle, p. 54 says that under Esdaile’s will ‘trusts continued until the death of his niece Eliza Margaret Esdaile [d. 28 May 1930]. The last lease having expired the Manor House was sold [7 June 1933]. The purchaser converted it into an Hotel and added the new wing.’
