COIN WEIGHT 988199

COIN WEIGHT 988199
Description: A worn complete, reworked and biface copper-alloy coin weight of Post-Medieval date, issued during the reign of James I (1603-1625). Dating to the period 1304-1619. Description: The obverse bears the crowned bust of James I right with the legend "IR BRI" . The obverse is struck leaving the coin weight oriented as a lozenge. The reverse bears a crowned mark of value V/S//VID for five shillings and six pence, which is equal to a 1/4 Laurel (Britain Crown), the reverse also has a crowned I countermark in the top right corner. The reverse is oriented square in plan. Both obverse and reverse would have originally been in a beaded border but this is now mostly obscured. Due to the rough cutting down of the weight the edges have suffered worse from corrosion than the surface which remains a light grey-green. Measurements:16.14mm long, 15.67mm wide, 2.08mm thick and 1.75g in weight (27 grains). Discussion: The counter mark likely relates to the fact this coin weight has been cut down likely to bring its weight in line with thistle crown coin of James I. A thistle crown being 31 grains (roughly 2g in weight). The weight of this corresponds with a lower legal weight for such a coin. The original weight appears to have been issued by the same maker as YORYM-1A35A2.
