HARNESS PENDANT 979987

Description: A Medieval copper alloy harness pendant dating to cAD1200-1400. The object is in the shape of a flower with a central circular plate and six projecting lobes. On the central plate is depicted a raise, moulded human head with straight hair on either side almost to chin length. There are remains of blue enamel to the left of the head and traces of red to the right. Each lobe has on the front an oval shaped raised knop. From the uppermost lobe extends an integral loop. The loop has a transverse piercing which is worn at the top. The back of the piece is plain. It measures 34.62mm in diameter including the lobes, is 4.37mm in thickness and weighs 10.53g. Griffiths (1995:1) dates this type of pendant to the 13th and 14th centuries. This appears to be a variant on a more common eight lobed variety which have lozenge shaped centres, moulded faces on the lobes themselves and faces without hair (see SWYOR-5E4271, DUR-08B0A2 and HAMP-3378B0 and Ashley 2002, 17; ref. 163).
