SEAL MATRIX 949424
Description: A Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1350. The matrix is vesica (pointed-oval) shaped with a longitudinal midrib on the reverse from the apex of which projects a loop. The front of the matrix is engraved with two lozenges, each halved by a transverse bar and with the two separated by a thicker transverse bar. The inscription reads (in retrograde): S' AGNETIS DE RERERD. 'The seal of Agnes of...' The place name has yet to be identified.
Dimensions: length 30.3mm; width 18.6mm; thickness 6.9mm; weight 6.08g.
Harvey and McGuiness (1996: 79) suggest that vesica shaped seals were popular with women and clerics in the 13th century, whilst the 14th century would see seals become smaller and more generic.
