BUCKLE 943757
Description: A Medieval copper alloy buckle with integral plate, probably dating to c. AD 1250 - 1400. The buckle consists of a single looped trapezoidal frame, sub-trapezoidal in cross section, with a sub-rectangular plate projecting from the bar end of the frame, its sides tapering towards the attachment end. There is a rectangualr aperture beneath the frame to accomodate a pin, now lost, with a further two circular rivet holes along the longitudinal median line of the plate. The plate is decorated with an engraved margin within which is an engraved design which gives an impression of two breaking waves. The reverse is undecorated. There are signs of gilding across the plate.
Dimensions: length 46.95mm; width 16mm; thickness (plate)1.04mm, (buckle) 2.06mm; weight 3.4g.
An apparently identical buckle is recorded in Griffiths, Philpott, Egan (2007) pl 17 no 756 where the engraving is described as "indeterminate".
