STRAP END 942250

Description: An Early Medieval copper alloy strap end, of Thomas's Class B type 1, probably dating to c. AD 750-1100. The strap end tapers from the transversely split attachment end into a roughly parallel-sided shaft, decorated with transverse ridges and grooves and terminating in a debased zoomorphic animal head. Two rivet separate copper alloy rivets survive at the attachment end. The decoration of the shaft consists of a triple stranded collar at the juncture with the attachment end and a double stranded collar delineating the terminal, with a pair of opposed V-shaped grooves in between. Traces of iron corrosion on the reverse of the shaft may suggest the presence of an applied iron hook. Length 40.7mm; Width 11.6mm; Thickness 4.1mm; Weight 6.71g. cf. Thomas (2003: 4) Class B, type 1.
