BROOCH 932445

Description: An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy and gilt oval plate brooch, dating to c AD 100 - 300. Part of the edge of the plate is missing and so is the pin and catchplate. The flat plate is divided in two by a plain flanged central oval bezel in which there would originally have been glass or similar. Most of the outer annulus is still largely gilded and is decorated with inscribed or punched circles and dots. On the underside there are the vestigial remains of the lug to hold the pin and even less - simply a mark - of the catchplate. Dimensions: 19.60mm in length; 14.73mm in width; 3g in weight. cf Hattatt 'A Visual Catalogue ...' 2007 p365 fig 224 (oval examples) for similar.
