STRAP FITTING 92293

STRAP FITTING 92293
Description: Incomplete copper alloy openwork strap fitting, apparantly rectangular in shape although one end is missing. At the surviving end two broken oval holes (??openwork pelta shapes) lie behind a vertical bar, at the centre of which is a copper alloy rivet with iron staining surrounding it, and possibly still attached to a small piece of iron. This end part is slightly lower than the vertical bar and open work design beyond (comparative thicknesses 2mm and 3mm respectively). The openwork design is not symmetrical. A slightly off-centre vertical rib bifurcates and curls to create the top of a circular shape (which is broken). Just above and to the other side of the rib, there is another now broken projection. Incomplete length 28.5mm, width 18.5mm. Weighs 4.02g. The breaks are not ancient, and recent-ish. Possibly late Roman and military in context.
