BUCKLE 881732

Description: A complete copper alloy Medieval buckle, dating to the period AD 1270-1350. A single looped oval buckle frame with a pointed lip and an offset and narrowed bar. The frame is D-shaped in cross section. The rear of the frame is flat. The point on the outer edge is faintly notched. Attached to the bar is a sheet metal buckle plate. The plate is sub-rectangular, narrowing slightly away from the frame, and of equal length front and rear. It has a central rectangular slot where it folds over the bar of the buckle to allow for the attachment of the pin, the sides are not notched to fit the frame. There is a single, circular, separate copper-alloy rivet running through both plates at the back with the ends flattened to blend into the plate. A patch of copper corrosion on the front of the plate appears to be preserved mineralised woven fabric, although too incomplete to suggest the weave. The wire pin is loosely hooked around the bar and then tapers to a point. The pin has been bent out of shape. The frame is 13.7mm wide and 13.1mm long, 24.4mm including the plate. The frame is 2.2mm thick, the plate 0.3mm thick and 7.0mm wide. The pin is 1.5mm in diameter. The entire thing weighs 1.31 grams. Egan (2007:88) suggests this type dates to the late 14th century.
