Description: A lead alloy weight of undetermined date. It may be a steelyard weight dating to the Roman period but could be a fishing weight of any period, up to modern times. It consists of a roughly tear drop shaped lead mass, 16.79mm in length, 11.08mm in width, with a copper alloy wire loop enclosed within it and protruding c25mm from the narrow end (it is now bent over). The other end of the loop can be seen just held wthin the lower part of the lump of lead. The wire is circular in section and c0.95mm in diameter. The lead may have been shaped with indentations to the lower part which give it a slightly rectangular profile.at that end. It has been suggested elsewhere that such items might be false teeth. Overall length: 28.63mm. It weighs 6.79g.
