BOOK FITTING 853528

MOUNT 853528
Description: A medieval cast copper-alloy umbonate quatrefoil mount of Howsam type B.1.2, dating to period c. AD 1300-1400. This object is domed at the front and largely concave at the rear. It has four evenly spaced lugs situated at the base. Each lug has a circular perforation and there is a ridge between each lobe and the dome. All four lugs are flat at the front and rear. At the front, the dome is decorated with a cross saltire which may have been incised. A close parallel can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 16; ref. 118) for which a c. 14th-century date is suggested as is a possible function as a book mounting.
