NAIL CLEANER 846426
Description: A Roman copper alloy Idiosyncratic nail-cleaner, dating to c AD 43-150. The nail cleaner appears to have been made from the bow of possibly a Nauheim derivative brooch. The nail cleaner is roughly leaf shaped. It comprises a plate of copper alloy which is roughly triangular with a smaller triangle above. At the top has a small projection which is angled to one side. The plate then broadens as the shoulders continue diagonally outwards and then narrows gradually towards the foot where there is a bifurcation. The front of the plate is decorated with an incised pattern of small lines along both sides of the lower part of the nail cleaner and down the centre. An oval hole has been pierced through the top of the nail cleaner. The back is undecorated. The nail cleaner weighs 1.98g and measures 39.46mm in length, 14.99mm in width and 0.82mm in thickness.
