SCABBARD 82889
Description: Copper alloy sword chape, missing one side and the lower section. The chape tapers from the top, and the upper surface and surviving side are slightly convex. The upper edge is formed by moulded decoration in the form of two fleur-de-lis (one complete, one incomplete). Below the fleur-de-lis is a section of openwork decoration with a central trefoil aperture and three circular apertures. Below the openwork section there are two transverse grooves separated by a ridge. Beneath this the chape is undecorated, although there may have been a further quatrefoil aperture towards the base of the chape, now broken off. There is no backplate surviving. There are traces of black coating on the surfaces. Patchy mid-green patina.
