HOARD 828
Description: Robertson 2000, 216 no. 880:
""On August 26th, 1967, in clearing the outside of the wall of Room L a most important find was made. A hard grey body two handled storage jar, 11½ ins. high buried only 1 foot below present ground level. This was found to be packed with coins on edge and to weigh ½ cwt., in it some sprigs of spice were placed presumably to keep animals from routing and indicating the hiding place.
It was found to contain 7717 coins mostly silvered bronze antoniniani and bronze of the period 250-290 AD, there were however 3 silver denarii, a rare find in a hoard of this date.
Many of the coins on cleaning were found to be in almost mint condition and some are unrecorded examples of various mints. Now scheduled at the British Museum."
