BUCKLE 823903
Description: A complete copper alloy, double loop trapezoidal buckle dating to between AD c.1620- AD c.1680.
The bands of the buckle bevel on the inside edge, and on each of the 8 angles (obtuse of acute), are pointed knops. The pin is securely attached to the central bar of the buckle, and moved freely at 360 degrees. The most prominent of the knops are the two which create a pointed triangle shape at its tips. The inferior surface remains undecorated, and so does the anterior surface, with exception to transverse grooves on the two opposite rounded knops. There is one grove on each knop and don't appear to follow in chronological pattern.
The maximum lenght of the buckle is 47.87mm, the maximum width is 27.15mm and the weight is 8.93g.
A fair example of this buckle can be found in Whitehead (2003) "Buckles", page 83, No. 516. Both conform to the same trapezoidal shape, and the pin design appears to be the same, but the literature examples knops are all rounded at the end, whereas the physical find only has two rounded knops which run from the central bar.
