HARNESS PENDANT 823217
Description: A complete copper alloy harness pendant dating between the period AD 1300- AD 1400.
The pendant is shield shaped in plan with an offset perforated loop extending perpendicularly from the top. The posterior surface of the pendant is undecorated, smooth and slightly concave, whereas the anterior surface is decorated with three chevrons decorated with red (gules) enamel. The design is only just visibly and is rather worn. Evidence of gilding remains in place.
The harness pendant 46.94mm in length, 29.91mm wide (maximum) and weighs 14.90g.
The coat of arms on the shield may be that of de Clare Earl of Gloucester Hertford. To support this suggestion, another pendant of similar design and shape (but considerbly smaller by size and weight) on the PAS database WILT- DC46EE.
